Gone but not forever–restaurants and cafes opposite the Riva

For a number of years now the city of Split has been promising to demolish the row of cafes and restaurants opposite the parking lot entrance to the Riva to make way for a new, more permanent structure which may even include a second floor.  So it was a real shock to see such well-known landmarks practically demolished within just a couple of days.

If you are a bus tourist to Split, you have walked by all of these establishments, so it was kind of the city to let these eateries stay open until the season had wound down.

One of the most popular cafes and restaurants in town, fcafe, was the anchor tenant in the area just opposite the Riva parking lot. In just three days it was reduced to rubble

All of the establishments here were housed in semi-permanent buildings, and some were open year round, like fcafe, the anchor property on the corner, opposite the the East Tower of Diocletian’s Palace.

Besides fcafe, another tourist landmark was Luna, whose sister restaurant is in the Pjaca;.as well as several smaller cafes who were all here for many years.

The view from where cars make the turn to park around the corner on the jetty where the catamarans dock looks pretty grim

I’ll try to find out what the real plans are for this prime piece of real estate and hopefully, whatever they put here, it will be ready before next season begins!

Sorry to see these landmarks go!
