It rained cats and dogs today in Split, so the last place anyone would want to be is the sub-basement of a 1,700 year-old Roman palace. But when it comes to wine, nothing stops the faithful from enjoying a truly spectacular showcase of Croatia’s best wineries.

And what’s even more amazing is that you can enjoy as many glasses as you wish for just 30 kunas (less than $5), plus a 30kn refundable deposit for the glass.  The sponsor, Slobodna Dalmacija, the local daily paper, and printer of DiscoverSplit, DiscoverKorcula and DiscoverHvar, has put on this feast for the past two years.  It only runs for two days, so tomorrow is your last chance to sample some really smashing wine. olive oils and yummy regional cheeses.

Spread out over the ancient basement halls were wine booths from some of the country’s best known makers as well as new wineries celebrating their first harvest, like Golden Dalmatia, run by an ebullient young winemaker Dario Gaspar who is producing a rare white called Zlatarica that he has cultivated in Vrgorac.

The basement halls were full of locals, visiting tourists and wine lovers all of whom were clearly enjoying the conviviality.  The event continues tomorrow with classes on wine tasting, workshops and other programs held in the basement as well as in the Hotel Vestibul. The adventure begins at Noon and runs til 9PM…..go!
