Lickety Split–move over Haagen Dasz, Luka is here!

Every ice cream lover has his or her favorite maker and flavor.  I have always loved Haagen Dasz coffee–vanilla ice cream and espresso.  Every taste is unadulterated joy!

Here in Split, the ice cream of choice is soft serve from Ledo and other commercial makers–the best of which is Premis, who makes theirs in Makarska.

There are a few home grown choices, but they tend to be in the same mold, with the sole exception of the chocolate at Slasticarnica Tradicija, the oldest ice cream and pastry shop in town on Bosanka St., which is truly killer.

So when LUKA opened last month, in a tiny, spotless shop next to the rear of the National Theatre, it attracted some immediate buzz.  A couple of Polish guys making their own ice cream and cakes?  Rosemary ice cream? Honey and lavender ice cream?  Saltines with caramel?

And those cakes and pies?  Although there are tons of pastry and cake shops, really top quality pies and cakes are hard to come by.  Wait til you try Luka’s  apple pie with vanilla ice cream …..yes, they use vanilla beans from Madagascar.

We have been there a bunch of times so Luka let’s us taste his newest creations.  Tonight we had some Bounty, Apple Pie and fresh forest berry ice cream from Poland!  As Natasha says, “all made with love!”

Luka's ice cream is as fearless as it is delicious--here we have saltines with caramel ice cream!

We plan to do another blog on Luka’s place when the light is better but we just couldn’t wait to spread the news……lickety Split!

  1. Hi:  This is Rick following you from London. I emailed you once before a few months ago.  This post is making my mouth water !   I will be on vacation in Split from 20 July for a couple of weeks and it would be great to meet up for a coffee if you were up for it.   Me and my wife Vedrana  have a place just up near the Hajduk stadium.   Hoping to hear from you !   All the best   Rick
