Sushi fans rejoice, at last we have a place to go in Split!

Samurai, Split’s first all-sushi restaurant, just behind the Bellevue Hotel (at the end of the waterfront Riva) is open!  Today is their second day, and being a big religious holiday here the place was pretty empty, but if the sushi is as authentic as the folks who run the place, it will be a smash!

From the outside, it’s an unpretentious store front joint with about 10 tables, including this one which abuts a huge window wall that opens to let the air in.  The fare is Japanese-American which means from fresh raw fish to California rolls.

I was in a huge rush, so I could only meet the owner, take a few photos and promise to be back tomorrow.  My wife and her daughter couldn’t wait however, and as I write this they are already high-tailing it down there by foot and will come back with a full report.

Samurai sure seems to be the real deal.  The owner and his sister run the place, with her son and his friend doing the sushi. I did spot a local but he was a server.

Before Samurai the only place in town with sushi all year round was Bota Sare in Bacvice above the beach, which is more known for its fish and oysters.  So Samurai has a rare opportunity—introduce locals to the joys of real sushi and satisfy the tons of tourists who already know how great it can be.  Good luck Samurai!

  1. This is wonderful news. One of the hardest parts of living in Split (for me) is not having a variety of cuisine. Sushi restaurants are usually the first I go to when traveling back home to the US. I am very excited to try this place out.
