Pavo Majic’s Naranca Gallery was the scene for a wonderful exhibition of the artwork of Edo Murtić (1921–2005) one of Croatia’s most celebrated abstract expressionists. It was a rare opportunity to see original art from such an important artist whose work is represented in museums and private collections around the world. Murtić painted in oil, and gouache as well graphic design, ceramics, mosaics, murals, and even theatrical sets.

At Naranca, there were pieces from his Mediterranean cycle, ceramics and other pieces—all vibrant, expressive works that showed a deep mastery of color and form and were thrilling to look at.

Murtic’s early work was mainly realistic paintings, but in his 50’s he was internationally recognized as one of the leading abstract painters from the socialist world. His subject material increasingly became involved with nature and he traveled widely in Croatia and elsewhere for his inspiration.

|The 1990’s war that engulfed the region affected him profoundly and in January, 2010 an exhibit of over 350 of his drawings, gouches and collages called “War” (Rat) opened at the Art Pavilion in Zagreb. The exhibition drew thousands and inspired the country’s leading politicians and artists to proclaim him “one of the greatest Croatian artists of the second half of the 20th century”.

After his death, The Murtić Foundation (Fundacija Murtić) was established to ensure that his art will continue to be available for future generation. Murtić also donated over 1,500 of his works to the City of Zagreb, including paintings, sculptures, mosaics, drawings, ceramics and enamels.

Hats off to Pavo Majic for once again so graciously using his studio to showcase not only graphic design from around the world but the stunning work of Edo Murtić!
