The Maltese Falcon lands in Split, yours for $600,000/week

The world’s largest private sailing yacht in Split

A few weeks ago, the Maltese Falcon, the largest private sailing yacht in the world, majestically landed in Split.  For people on the waterfront Riva,  seeing this 300 foot long nautical spaceship was a thrill.  The most spectacular feature about the ship is her amazing masts.

like antennae on some galactic spaceship, the masts on the Maltese Falcon not only soar into space, they can be rotated to ensure optimum wind capture to propel the ship under sail power alone, at at astonishing 20 knots!

With more than 25,000 feet of sail, my only regret is not seeing the ship underway.  But even at anchor, its astonishingly low waterline, rakish deck and those amazing masts were jaw-dropping.

Built in 2006 for an internet tycoon for a reported $160 million, the boat was sold a few years back to a global hedge fund queen for a mere $90 million.  But because she uses it “only two weeks a year”, you and your friends can rent it by the week for a just $600,000.  After all she said, “it’s an enterprise”.

What gives the Maltese Falcon such speed is what’s known as a DynaRig.  The sails are completely electronically controlled.  Unlike a typical mainsail or spinnaker or jib, these beauties unfurl and stay put as the on board computer senses the wind and positions the mast so that the sails will capture as much wind as possible–without having to be “re shaped” like normal sails that are hauled in or out by hand and winches to do the same thing.

What’s as amazing as the physical boat itself is that it’s designed for just 12 people–and a crew of 16!!  I could insert lots of interior photos but mega yachts like this all have fabulous interiors.

If you want to charter the Falcon this is how it’s sold:

“A privileged few will be fortunate enough to experience Maltese Falcon under sail. The 88 meter clipper Maltese Falcon is the largest sailing yacht in the world and in a breeze Maltese Falcon’s immense DynaRig powers her to record shattering speeds.Maltese Falcon’s interior is luxurious with a rich contemporary décor, delightful to the eye and soothing to the soul. Maltese Falcon is the ideal choice of yacht for large scale entertaining while meandering between smart anchorages, or for that once in a lifetime blue water ocean passage, foaming through the crests, under a towering cloud of sail. Atlantic crossings in ten days are on offer from this extraordinary yacht! A masterpiece of technology and design, the Maltese Falcon is a yacht without equal….from $600,000 per week….”
