Split wins Croatian Baseball League Championship!

Split hung on for a 10-9 win over rival Karlovac today to  win the Croatian Baseball League Championship 4 games to 1 in their best of 7 series.

Once again it was Split’s coach and the league’s leading pitcher Ernesto Pereira who was the team’s St. Bernard, coming in to pitch the final three innings and belting a bases clearing double to break the game open.

The game, like the ugly 17-15 win in game 2, was marred by way too many walks and errors by both teams.  After taking a 1-0 lead, Split;s three run lead evaporated in the fifth or sixth inning when Karlovac capitalized on poor fielding and erratic pitching to take a one run lead in the 7th.

Split fought back and added four runs in the 8th to take a 10-6 lead and never look back.

In the 9th, Karlovac loaded the bases and came to within a run, but Split put down the rally to hang on to the victory.

Several of the team members will be going on to join the Croatian National team as they journey to Prague to play in international competition, and later to Germany.

It was a long, hard season but Split showed that they could hang in there and continue to win despite some fundamental lapses which need to be worked on in the off season.

It’s still a young team with tremendous potential.  It needs to focus more on fundamentals to be a perennial winner–riding on the shoulders of Ernesto Pereira may work for a season, but the team needs to develop its younger players and a more selfless team winning attitude.

Go Split!
