Split takes 1-0 lead in best of 7 Croatian League Baseball Championship

Behind the one hit, 14KO pitching of coach Ernesto Pereira, Split took game one of the Croatian League Baseball Championship 3-0 against arch-rival Karlovac. The two teams will play again tomorrow in Split in a best of 7 series that continues next week in Karlovac.

The game pitted the league’s two best pitchers, both former major league prospects who played in the minor leagues and then for professional teams in South America and Japan before coming to Croatia.

The game was tight for the first few innings with Split holding on to a slim lead with some gritty base running and timely hits.  With Pereira in control, Karlovac could only manage to hit a handful balls to the outfield and left runners stranded on first throughout the game.  In addition to his 14 strikeouts, Pereira walked just one.

After yesterday’s lop=sided 15-2 win over the US Navy, any concern the Split team would be less than sharp was dispelled by their poise on and off the field.  Despite a few errors, the team showed its heart cutting off any Karlovac threat before it had a chance to develop.

Go Split!
