Split beats Oxford and Cambridge to win Crew Regatta!

Crossing the finish line

Under bright skies today, the semi-annual Split Regatta was held pitting Oxford, Cambridge and a crew from Split competing against each other.

About 2,500 people lines the Riva to watch the spectacle and cheer the homeboys on.   There were four heats and Split, by winning two of them, won the meet and the first place trophy.

It was surely an odd sight seeing racing shells in the harbor framed by several cruise ships, Jadrolinija ferries and a small flotilla of local boats who wanted to get close to the action.

Wish I had a better lens!

The Regatta was all part of Sudamja, a week long celebration honoring the patron saint of Split, St. Dujam.  The Riva was lined with booths selling everything from candy to religious gifts and the place was packed.

Next week it’s the Week of Olives and we’ll be on hand helping Olynthia Natura, the olive oil maker on the island of Solta, showcase its fine products.
