Split beats Zagreb 10-2 to take first place

Today was the baseball game everyone was anticipating–Zagreb, last year’s winner of the all three championships–league, Croatia and inter-league against arch enemy Split.  A few weeks back in Zagreb we split a pair of games but the bad blood between the two teams was evident.

Our sultan of swat and head coach, a former pro player in the Toronto system who played in Japan and Venezuela, was the head coach and most valuable player of Zagreb last year.  Seems they didnt want to pay him a salary off season and Split’s sponsor did–so he’s now with us and they are immensely ticked off.  Go Ernesto!

It was a tense 1-1 through the first five innings, then a three run homer, some timely hits and great baserunning broke the game open for us.

My role, coaching first and going to all the practices to give whatever help I can, is very appreciated by the team’s mostly 20-somethings.  So while I avoid the road trips with these testosterone-filled ballplayers, being here in Split and getting to throw batting practice. shag a few flies and pretend I’m in shape is pretty fabulous.

Check out the smiles on the benchwarmers….and that’s one of Zagreb’s hitters being fooled by a Sarma curve-ball.  Go Split!
